Upon request, I organise courses of natural dye and handweaving held at my workshop on the island of Panarea.
Cours of natural dye
A course of two consecutive days
Teaching hours: 12 Topic Dyeing wool or silk yarns in skeins and/or samples of fabrics with some of the historical local dyeing plants available in the applicable season. The participants are welcome to bring their own material (wool or silk) or else, at the end of the course to file samples of the attained colours with the materials provided in the workshop. Course programme 1st Day – Local ramble in the surroundings to learn how to recognize and gather the dyeing material (specific to each different time of the year). Setting and preparation of the dye baths. Preparation of the yarns through mordants, using some mineral salts. 2nd day – Boiling the vegetable elements in order to obtain the decoction to be used to dye the yarn. The dye baths and the development of the colours. Rinsing and cataloguing the different colours attained. |
Course of weaving
Teaching hours: 8
(It is possible to split them in two half days) Topic A course of weaving on the “nomadic” loom. This is a course for beginners, or for the ones wishing to get to know the potential uses of this specific kind of loom, whose upsides are being light, mobile and thus adaptable to any place. This frame loom is an extremely simple and low-cost tool useful to learn the basics of the warp and weft, perfect for you to start experimenting. Course programme Every participant will choose amongst the threads available at the workshop, their own selection of materials and colours to be used to create their own handicraft (hats, small bags, collars or tapestries) You will learn how to calculate warping plan. The warp by the warper with blocks and installation on the loom. Variations of weaving, wefts, and colours. At the end of the course, together with a fascinating experience and some specific notions acquired, you will bring back home a unique accessory, you lovingly imagined and genuinely created. |
